EDITORIAL POLICIES
How R! is edited, how contributors are credited and paid, where we stand on AI and translation, and how we work with advertisers and sponsors.
Editorial intention
R! is not interested in telling readers what to think. We want work that makes people spend time with an idea, examine their own thoughts and beliefs, and encounter people and worlds they may never otherwise meet.
Guest editors
Guest editors lead selection and development in sections where they have relevant knowledge or lived experience.
Editing
Major edits are developed collaboratively with contributors rather than imposed without their knowledge.
18+
R! is 18+ so explicit work can be included when relevant. Not every issue will contain explicit content.
Contributor rights
Creator retains ownership.
R! publication / promotion / archive rights are agreed in writing.
Major edits are developed collaboratively with contributors.
Contributor copies: TBD because of costs.
To confirm: exclusivity / reprint terms / withdrawal process / commissioned cancellation terms. [TBD]
Pay
Payment terms are communicated before participation. Open submissions may be unpaid. Commissioned work terms are agreed in advance.
R! is committed to fair and transparent compensation as revenue grows.
AI
Everyone feels rushed to do everything. Everything needs to be perfect, high budget and high brow. R! should feel like a free space of exploration.
No generative AI content or visuals in submitted creative or editorial work.
Translation + multilingual work
Translation is optional. A contributor can provide their own translation, work with someone on it, or use AI tools for translation if they want.
Multilingual work is welcome. Translation is an opt-in choice rather than something R! forces everyone to do.
Advertising + sponsorship
Small businesses / startups / creators / independent brands / creative studios / cultural organizations / independently owned and independently funded partners.
The publication is not designed around major conglomerate advertising.
A sponsor may support the magazine, a page, a feature, a column, a category, a section or an event. Recognition or a logo may appear as “brought to you by.”
- Editorial independence: advertising and sponsorship do not control editorial or creative decisions.
- Sponsors do not get creative control over contributors or pre-publication approval as a commercial right.
- Sponsored content only exists when it does not conflict with editorial positioning or move away from the creative independence of the people involved.
- Disclosure: sponsored relationships are clearly identified.
Rates / specs / placement limits: [TBD].
